Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Deficiency in Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) causes problems with the development of mature red blood cells and is rarely associated with Subacute Combined Degeneration of the Spinal Cord (SACD). Vitamin B12 Deficiency is caused by Pernicious Anaemia, poor diet, some drugs, inability to absorb the vitamin due to malabsorption syndrome such as Coeliac Disease and excessive drinking.

Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency
- Tongue - smoothing and shining
- Anaemia - pallor, skin may have lemon tinge
- Pins and needles in the feet and toes more than in the hands or fingers
- Unsteady when walking
- Muscle wasting and reduced strength in leg muscles
- General aches and pain
- May be slow developing paralysis
- Problems with position, balance and inability to feel vibrations
- Dementia
Treatment is with Vitamin B12 or in the case of Pernicious Anaemia a factor which allows the absorption of the vitamin.
