Vaginitis Symptoms and Treatment
Vaginitis also known as Vaginosis is a mild infection or inflammation of the vagina, which also may be called bacterial vaginosis or nonspecific vaginitis.

Cause
The bacterium Gardnerella vaginalis has been associated with vaginosis, although recent studies suggest a mixture of bacteria may be associated with the illness. Most of these bacteria are normally found in the vagina, but in vaginitis the numbers are much higher than normal.
It is not clear how girls get vaginitis, although those teens who are sexually active and those who have more than one partner have higher rates of disease and more infections than older women. While vaginitis may be related to sexual activity, it cannot be passed directly from one person to another.
Symptoms
Gray or frothy vaginal discharge with a foul or fishsmelling odor is the hallmark of this disorder. It rarely causes itch, burning, or irritation.
Diagnosis
Inspection of the vaginal discharge can diagnose the disease.
Treatment
Vaginitis is easily treated with the antibiotic metronidazole (Flagyl), which is also used to treat trichomoniasis. Sexual intercourse and douching are not recommended during treatment. Patients should bathe or shower daily with plain soap and water; bubble baths and bath salts or oils should be avoided until the infection clears.
