Tuberous Sclerosis Disorder

Tuberous Sclerosis (TS) is a disorder that causes benign growths (“tubers”) on several different organs within the body, including the brain, eyes, kidneys, heart, skin, and lungs; it occurs in about one in 6,000 births.

Tuberous Sclerosis

Cause
There is a 50 percent chance that a parent with tuberous sclerosis (TS) will have a child with the disease.

Symptoms
The condition is often first recognized in children who experience epileptic seizures or who exhibit developmental delays. The severity of TS varies from mild skin abnormalities to very severe cases that cause MENTAL RETARDATION or kidney failure.

Treatment
Treatment usually includes medication to prevent SEIZURES, treatments to address skin problems, surgery to remove tumors (to reduce the risk of cancer as well as for cosmetic reasons), and the management of high blood pressure caused by kidney disease. As with all of the neurocutaneous syndromes, a child’s prognosis depends on the severity of the case.

  1. My son was diagnosed with TS at 17. He has the leaf non-tanning marks on certain parts of his back and legs. Other than that he has a small red bumps on cheeks and nose.I am happy to say I don’t notice any other signs and he is 22 now. But the red bumps are noticeable and he is also prone to getting warts on his hand – is this connected and is there anything we can do about the facial bumps?
