Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is an unexpected death of an infant for which the cause remains unknown although it is thought to be related to the delayed maturation of the arousal mechanism and brainstem respiratory control.

  • Prematurity
  • Apnea
  • Maternal smoking
  • Deficient prenatal care
  • Perinatal asphyxia
  • Infants age 2-4 months

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Prevention

It is always advised that infants should be put on their backs while sleeping.
