Food Allergy in Adults and Children – Part2

Despite common belief to the contrary, allergy to iodine, allergy to radiocontrast material (used in some lab procedures), and allergy to fish or shellfish are not related. A child with an allergy to fish or shellfish should not worry about cross-reactions with radiocontrast dyes or iodine.

Soy Soybeans have become a major part of processed food products in the United States, and it can be hard to avoid products made with soybeans. While soybeans alone are not a major food in the typical American diet, because they are contained in so many products, eliminating all those foods can result in an unbalanced diet. A dietitian should be consulted to help plan for proper nutrition. Soybeans and soy products are found in baked goods, canned tuna, cereals, crackers, infant formulas, sauces, and soups. At east one brand of peanut butter lists soy on the label.

Studies show that soy lecithin and soybean oil can be tolerated by most soy-allergic individuals. Wheat It may not be obvious in what products wheat can be hidden, so labels should be read carefully. Wheat is contained in some brands of hot dogs, ice cream, and imitation crabmeat. Wheat flour is sometimes flavored and shaped to look like beef, pork, and shrimp, especially in Asian dishes.

Food Allergy in Adults and Children – Part 1

Food Allergy is an immune system response to a food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful. Once the immune system decides that a particular food is harmful, it creates specific antibodies to it in an attempt to protect the body. The next time the child eats that food, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals (including histamine) in order to protect the body.

These chemicals trigger a cascade of allergic symptoms that can affect breathing, the heart, the skin, or the gastrointestinal tract. Most food allergies trigger reactions such as itching, hives, and swelling, but in some cases a more serious response known as anaphylactic shock can occur. This leads to a loss of consciousness or even death.

food allergies

Scientists estimate that between six and seven million Americans suffer from true food allergies. Many food allergies disappear as the child gets older; about a third of cases disappear in one to two years if the child carefully avoids the offending item. However, allergies to peanuts, nuts, fish, and shellfish often do not disappear with time. Many different common foods may trigger an allergic reaction, including citrus fruits, dairy products, wheat, eggs, fish, cola drinks, artificial coloring, shellfish, berries, tomatoes, pork, and nuts. Infants prone to allergies may be especially sensitive to milk and milk products, wheat, eggs, and citrus fruits.

Allergic reactions can be caused by even very tiny (even undetectable) amounts of the food. For example, a child who is allergic to peanuts could go into anaphylactic shock after eating a food that only has been touched by peanuts. Food additives also may cause problems. About 15 percent of children who are allergic to aspirin are also sensitive to Yellow Dye # 5 (tartrazine).

Toxic Shock Syndrome – Treatment and Prevention

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is an uncommon condition caused by infection with Staphylococcus bacteria, characterized by a distinctive skin rash resembling sunburn on the palms and soles of the feet. The condition, first recognized in the 1970s, is associated with the use of certain brands of highly absorbent tampons (now taken off the market). About 70 percent of cases occur in girls and women who were using tampons when symptoms begin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that one out of every 100,000 menstruating girls and women develops toxic shock syndrome (TSS) each year.

toxic shock syndrome

About three percent of TSS cases are fatal. Since 1984 there have been 69 reports of death related to tampon use; all but three were caused by TSS. However, the risk of death from TSS is higher in cases not related to menstruation.

Toxic Shock Syndrome Symptoms
When related to menstruation, TSS symptoms may not begin until the first few days after a girl’s period and tend to appear quickly. In addition to the skin rash, symptoms include sudden high fever, vomiting and diarrhea, headache, muscular aches and pains, dizziness, and disorientation. Blood pressure may drop rapidly and shock may develop. The sunburn-like rash may not develop until the patient is very ill, or it may go completely unnoticed if it appears in a small area. The skin on palms and feet may flake and peel. Once a person has had TSS, she is more likely to get it again. Death usually occurs as a result of a prolonged drop in blood pressure or lung problems.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an emotional condition that often occurs after direct or indirect exposure to a terrifying event in which a child witnessed or actually experienced physical harm. Traumatic events that can cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) include violent assaults, physical or sexual abuse, shootings, natural disasters, or car accidents. One out of 13 Americans will develop PTSD during their lifetime, which is especially common among girls and women, who are about twice as likely as boys or men to develop PTSD.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

This may be due to the fact that girls and women tend to experience domestic violence, rape, or abuse more often. Most children with PTSD try to avoid any reminders or thoughts of the trauma, but despite this, they often reexperience the ordeal in intense flashbacks, memories, nightmares, or frightening thoughts. Feelings of guilt from surviving an event in which friends or family died is also often a common feature of PTSD.

Any traumatic event can cause this disorder. Children under age 10 and teenagers through age 21 are more susceptible, beginning either as a sudden response to an event or a gradual development that can become chronic or persistent. Studies indicate that people who live with PTSD tend to have abnormal levels of key hormones involved in the stress response.

Sick School Syndrome

Many of the nation’s schools have poor ventilation and significant sources of pollution inside the buildings, which can be a serious problem for children with asthma; in particular, indoor pollutants can be a problem. When a building has indoor air problems, it is known as a “sick building.” When a school is deemed sick, it means that the people inside experience health problems that have no other obvious cause and that these symptoms or problems disappear or improve when they leave the building. According to a 1995 federal government survey, half of all schools in the country were sick schools.

sick school syndrome

Diagnosis
There are no strict criteria for diagnosing sick school syndrome; health experts make a diagnosis by examining the child and assessing whether the symptoms seem related to being in school. Sick school syndrome is often wrongly blamed for several illnesses and disorders ranging from INFLUENZA to ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER. Therefore, it is important for health experts to look for other explanations for a child’s symptoms before attributing them to the school environment.

Psoriasis Skin Disorder

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder affecting more than 4 million individuals, producing silvery, scaly plaques on the skin. The skin condition usually begins in adolescence and affects 2 percent of the population. The most common type of psoriasis is called “plaque psoriasis” (or psoriasis vulgaris), characterized by raised, inflamed lesions with silver-white scales. Other far less common forms include pustular, guttate, inverse, and erythrodermic psoriasis.

Psoriasis Skin Disorder

The condition is considered to be mild if only 10 percent or less of the body is affected; 10 percent to 30 percent indicates a moderate problem, and psoriasis over more than 30 percent of the body is considered to be severe. The location of the symptoms, more than the extent, influences how disabling the condition may be. Psoriasis only on the palms and soles of the feet can be physically disabling, while psoriasis on the face can be emotionally disturbing. Typically, a person with psoriasis experiences cycles of improvement and flares; the disease can go into remission for periods ranging from one to 60 years.

Epilepsy

Seizures during which the individual can have convulsions and fits with spasmodic movements and periods of unconsciousness, caused by electrical disturbances in the brain. Some forms of epilepsy don't lead to visible convulsions but can result in brief absences where there is an episode of loss of awareness but not loss of consciousness.

Symptoms of Epilepsy

  • Fits may start with warning symptoms or aura that can include face looking flushed, visual disturbance, headache or acute awareness of smells
  • Periods of unconsciousness and fainting
  • Spasmodic movements and convulsions
  • Clenched jaw
  • May bite tongue
  • Frothing at the mouth
  • Urinary incontinence: the bladder empties due to the seizure
  • May fall into coma, although this will usually resolve in a few minutes
  • Individual comes round though they may be initially confused and drowsy
